Letters to the Editor
H. W. Pearce is membership-funded

Dear Editor:

Who was the person that misinformed you that H.W. Pearce Jr. Park is a public pool? Surely it was not an unnamed city councilman who knows that Pearce Park is membership-funded and is operated only by money generated by membership and guest fees.

Do you not read your own publication, since the annual membership drive is advertised in it every spring?

I am proud of Jackson and what it has to offer guests, but that does not mean that guests should enter our park free. When I visit Gulf Shores, I do not expect to enjoy Waterville free of charge. Did the motels or restaurants in Jackson let the Little League players and parents sleep or eat free of charge? I believe that you have a double standard in the belief that it's OK for them to charge, but not Pearce Park.

It takes a lot of money to operate our park and every bit of extra money helps to keep our membership price at a minimum.

I take offense, as a longtime member of Pearce Park, that you even should have an opinion on this subject, since you are not, or never have been a member of our fine facility.

On a lighter note, congratulations to all the Little League and Dixie League players and All Stars. I am proud that Jackson sponsors these fine programs for our children of our community.

Brenda Coleman

Responding to 'Our Opinion'

Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Facility Committee Board, which operates the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park, we would like to clear up some comments written in the "Our Opinion" column last week.

First of all, the local public pool mentioned in the article is H.W.Pearce Memorial Park, a membership-funded pool. Yes, visiting teams were charged to swim as any guest of a member is charged a fee. There was no negotiated fee because we treated Little League teams as we treat all other visiting ball teams.

Your comment, "It should be a common practice to extend free swimming for these visiting team members each year." Our comment to you is, "Does Little League give visiting teams free food? Do the restaurants and food chains give the visiting teams free food? What about the stores, do they give free merchandise or does Jackson Links give free golf?

Why do you feel H.W. Pearce Memorial Park should be any different?

For you and others who may not know, Jackson does have a very nice public pool located on Highway 177. This location has a playground, covered pavilions and the Jackson Recreation Center. All operated by the city of Jackson. There is a daily rate for using this facility.
