Watershed Assessment meeting July 31

The Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District will have their 2007 Watershed Assessment meeting on Tuesday, July 31 at 7 p.m. at the USDA office, 3100 Hwy. 43, Suite B, Jackson, AL. The public is welcome to attend the meeting.

Diabetes class at Jackson Medical Center

There will be diabetes classes presented at Jackson Medical Center will continue each consecutive Tuesday during the month of July at 6:30 each evening. Contact René Forman, RN BSN, 246-9021.

Unveiling of portraits Aug. 5 in Chatom

There will be a historic unveiling of the portraits of the Chatom Elementary and Washington County High School principals, along with some WCHS faculty and the Frederick Jordan property benefactors on Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Washington County High School. This is a project designed and produced by David C. Howell, former Washington County Superintendent of Education.

Mauvilla location topic of historical society

The Clarke County Historical Society will meet Sunday, July 29 at 2:30 p.m. at the Grove Hill Town Hall. Guest speaker will be Andrew Holmes, as archeological field technician for Barry Vittor and Associates of Mobile.

Holmes has researched the location of Mauvilla, the Indian town where Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto fought with Native Americans in 1540. Using his father's calculations, N.H. Holmes Jr., and the journal of Spanish officer Garcilaso, his work has identified a location in the south part of Clarke County as the site.

The public is invited to attend.

Uniforms required for Washington Co. students

The first day for students in Washington County Schools is Aug. 13. School uniforms will be required for all students who attend Washington County Schools. Parents may contact the school's principal for additional details.

Back to school pizza party /fun day Aug. 4

The Life of the Poor (TLOTP), a nonprofit organization, is having a back to school pizza party/fun day for all kids in kindergarten through 5th grade. The event will be Saturday, Aug. 4 from 1-4 p.m. at the Gillmore Elementary School playground in Jackson. If you would like to help or have any questions call Tavaris Hill, 251-769-8486.

Benefit singing for Virginia Lankford

There will be a benefit singing for Virginia "Ginny" Lankford July 28 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Wagarville Nutrition Center. Entertainment will include both country and gospel music. Refreshments will be sold and there will be a cake auction.

Mother's Day Out openings available

There are currently openings in the Weekday Preschool Program at First Baptist Church in Jackson for the Mothers' Day Out classes. These classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. until 12 noon and are for children ages 6 months to 4 years old. Call First Baptist at 246- 4491 for registration or come by the church for registration forms.

.Alabama Career Center has extended hours

The Alabama Career Center located at 3090 Highway 43 South, Jackson, Alabama has extended office hours to better serve the public. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for your convenience.

Sam and Sarah Todd Memorial Golf Tournament

The 6th Annual Sam and Sarah Todd Memorial Golf Tournament will be Aug. 11 at Deer Field Golf Course in Chatom.

Tee time will be 8 a.m. and the format will be a two-man medal play. Entry fee is $75 per player with a deadline of July 30 for registration. Lunch will be provided.

Sponsor/entry fees are: Corporate sponsors, $450, plaque and four players, ad billboard; Hole sponsors, $250, ad at hole and two players.

Prizes include 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies, stereos, televisions and more. There will also be a $30,000 hole in one award.

Clarke Prep open house

Clarke Prep School will have an open house on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6-8 p.m. The new headmaster, David Walker, and the new teachers joining the Clarke Prep staff will be available to greet students and parents.
