Jackson High School has hired Tony Johnson from South Jones High School in Laurel, Miss. to take over the Aggie defense.

Johnson has been a part of three state championship teams as well as coaching stints at Southern Mississippi as a graduate assistant. He also was the defensive coordinator for the Mississippi Pride of the Regional Football League.

"I came over one day and met with Coach Blackmon at the Jackson Steakhouse. We talked football for three hours. I enjoyed talking to him for those three hours and we are only 83 miles from my family. So I decided to come to Jackson.

Johnson went on to describe his coaching style, "I want to win. I consider myself a hardnosed player's coach that is a good motivator. I believe in the old-fashioned way."

One of the first things the new Aggie DC would like to do is get to know his players.

"No matter what school you are at there are always going to be different types of kids. You have to understand the kids' mentality so you can figure out which ones you can ride, the ones you have to teach and the ones you have to guide."

Johnson said he will run a basic 4-3 defense that uses a lot of disquises. He uses the word K.I.S.S. when teaching his players. Those letters stand for "Keep-It-Simple-Stupid".

"I am a 4-3 guy. My 4-3 is a look. There may be 10 (blitzing players) coming on one play or one coming on another."

With such a late start for Johnson you would think the players would have a tough time learning a new system.

"My defense is not hard to learn. It is hard for people to figure out what we are doing. They will see a basic 4-3 when they snap the ball and then we will shift to a 4-2-5 or a 3-5-3. We are going to move. My philosophy is stop the run and make them throw. We are going to put enough pressure on the quarterback that he only has time for one read. We are going to cause turnovers and havoc."

Coach Johnson gave the Aggie players that were working out Monday morning a pretty good welcoming speech.

"I came up the first time last week and just watched the players work out. I just stayed back and observed. I wanted to see what our kids could do and see what we have. Today when I walked in the weight room I let them know you are going to work or you can get out of here. This is where it starts. This is what you have to do to win. They will get to know me pretty well over the next few weeks."
