Two Jackson police officers were recognized, during Tuesday's Jackson City Council meeting, for their efforts in saving the lives of two children who nearly drowned at a local home day care March 8.

The incident occurred at a home day care near Jackson operated by Nancy Overstreet. John Thomas Atchison, the son of Chip and Lori Atchison and Cole Hicks, the son of Robert and Tiffany Hicks, both under the age of two, were found unconscious in a pool located on the property.

Officers Carey Slayton and Barry Fowler were presented with certificates of commendation and pins by Chief Charles Burge. "If not for the lifesaving efforts of these two officers, the outcome of the situation may have been totally different," said Burge during his presentation.

Mayor Richard Long and several of the city council members echoed the chief's comments and the officers received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

Another ceremony recognizing those who helped save the lives of the two young boys will be conducted at noon today (Thursday) at the helipad behind Jackson Medical Center.

Mayor's report

Mayor Long made the following comments during his report to the council:

*"The Fourth of July fireworks display was enjoyed by many area citizens. I want to especially thank Kevin Woodson, Chief Burge and the JPD for outstanding service on this holiday. The city has invited the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce to take over the project next year as a fund-raising project.

*"We received an updated traffic count from Goodwin Mills and Cawood. The counts were taken on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The data indicated that the highest traffic flow was on Friday at a location just south of Wal-Mart on Highway 43. In a 12-hour period more than 20,000 vehicles were counted. This is an increase of 4,000 vehicles from when the last count was taken in 2005.

*"I will be attending the El Camino Highway 84 Conference in Washington DC this week. Five states will meet to discuss current and future Highway 84 plans and more importantly have face-to-face meetings with our congressmen to request their continued support for funding the expansion. Clarke County will have approximately 15 representatives at the conference.

*"I participated in the final inspection of the expansion of the 50,000 square foot expansion of the the New Era building, Monday. The building is essentially completed with very few items found during the inspection. This creates the opportunity for 150 more jobs with 40 jobs being filled immediately. There will be a ceremony Friday morning at 10 a.m. to celebrate the official opening of the expansion.

*"Construction of the $1-plus million Clarke-Mobile Counties Gas District office building has started and the contractor is HUB Construction of Jackson.

*"There will be an ERGOT trucking terminal constructed on Clolinger Road across from the Jackson Public Works facility.

*"I want to congratulate all of the Little League and Dixie League All-Star teams on their play during the tournaments. All of the leagues have had an outstanding season. We received many compliments on the North Jackson Park complex and the ability to play ball during rainy conditions. The council is to be commended for upgrading the infields and the complex.

*"Betty Powell (Jackson City Clerk) distributed a listing from the municipal journal containing a calendar of dates leading up to the municipal election in 2008. The election will be on the fourth Tuesday of August. I want to remind each of you that you should not politic municipal employees on municipal property. I have requested my department heads to inform their employees to limit their visits at city offices to official business and I request the same from each of you."

Council members echoed the mayor's comments on the success of the fireworks display, the Little League and Dixie League teams and congratulated officers Slayton and Fowler.

Councilman Marks commended the Jackson Waverunners for a successful season. "The program keeps growing each year and has brought a lot of people to Jackson."

The only action taken by the council was the approval of a $29,850 contract with Roemer Asphalt LLC for the resurfacing of Cleveland Street.
