Several senior citizens were injured, two severely, when the van they were traveling in crashed on Highway 17 north of Chatom, Monday, around 9:10 a.m.

The van, which was reportedly traveling south, was believed to have been transporting the seniors to the Chatom Nutrition Center when it left the roadway near the Yarbo community, crossed an old railroad bed and struck a pine tree.

Two of the van's occupants received severe injuries and were transported to a Mobile hospital by Medivac helicopter, which landed at a nearby residence. Several other passengers suffered nonlife threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to Washington County Hospital for treatment.

Emergency agencies responding to the scene included the Washington County Sheriff's Department, which handled traffic control, Chatom Police, Millry Police, Jackson Emergency Transport Service (JETS), McIntosh Rescue Squad, Yarbo and Chatom fire departments.

The names of those injured were not known by Monday's early press deadline. According to emergency personnel at the scene, the van was believed to have been occupied by eight people.
