SPORTS REPORT
Are you a star?
BY CHRIS SHERMAN SA Sports Writer

How great would it be if we were Major Leaguers, starting in the NFLor suiting up for Alabama or Auburn?

Growing up I am sure we all had these same aspirations. We all wanted to be someone great.

For me it was to play college ball and move on to the Majors. It didn't take long for me to realize those dreams were a little far-fetched.

I was a decent baseball player but nowhere near a professional ball player or even a big-time college player. But that was fine with me. I did all I could do and that was good enough for me at the time.

For some of our local players that do have the talent I was not blessed with, there is no excuse for not making it. Our area is loaded with great players on the diamond, basketball court and the football field.

The sky is the limit for many of those athletes. It is beyond my imagination why they are not taking advantages of their gifts.

It seems for a lot of kids around here today it is "cooler" to ride the dirt roads or hang out with friends in some abandoned parking lot rather than taking advantage of their God-given talent. It drives me crazy to see someone with unbelievable talent-whether athletic or not-waste it.

What these kids and their parents are not realizing is this is their chance to shine. They have been blessed with unbelievable talents that they are letting slip away. For a lot of them it is too late. They have graduated and are now stuck thinking of what might have been for the rest of their lives.

For others, they still have a chance. Maybe you have one more year of high school or you may have four. Now is the time to start bettering yourself.

It will be something that you regret the rest of your life if you fail to take advantage why you have the opportunity. If I could have my high school years back I would do things completely different.

How many of us have said that line before?

We can accomplish so much more with just a little bit of effort. Those days are now gone for me and all I can do now is try to encourage other people to not let their moment pass.

There is not one particular person I am talking about but I have several in mind. You know who you are. If you find yourself fitting into some of these categories it may not be too late. You may only get one chance to be a star. Don't let your star pass without grabbing on.
