Some Jackson High students to be subject to drug screenings
By Barry H. Hendrix Special to The South Alabamian

The Clarke County Board of Education approved June 20 drug screening for students involved in extracurricular activities at Jackson High School. The screening will also affect students who want parking privileges.

In the written policy, the school system declares students involved in extracurricular activities as "role models for other students. In order to maximize the skills and talents of our students, a drug free learning environment is crucial."

Student athletes, cheerleaders and other students in extracurricular activities in grades nine to 12 will be tested for drugs and alcohol. "Failure to comply with this policy will result in the student's loss of the privilege to participate," the policy reads.

Students wishing to drive and park a vehicle on school property are also subject to the policy.

The test will be conducted prior to and during the activities "on a random basis without advance notice." A student testing positive will be subject to suspension from school activities for 30 days. A second violation could mean suspension from activities for a minimum of eight weeks. A third violation carries suspension for a full calendar year.

Other requirements may be deemed appropriate by the school principal to drive or park a vehicle on school property.

The drug testing will eventually be expanded countywide, said Superintendent Gerald Stephens. "We had to start somewhere," he said.

In other action from the June 20 school board meeting, the board approved changes to the uniform policy at Jackson High School.

Pants with welt or patch pockets, or pockets with flaps will be allowed. A dark JHS Aggie-style purple polo shirt can now be worn.

Brown shoes (closed toe and heel, flat sole, lace up or slip-ons) are allowed, and a gray, purple or black hoodie sweatshirt with the JHS logo is now allowed during cold weather days.

For the month of May, bills and accounts paid totaled $869,389.24, and payroll totaled $1,918,353.26.

+The following bids were awarded: Technology America for 15- inch monitors ($145 each);

Intec for "Thin Client" minicomputers ($398 each);

Mobile Fixture for kitchen equipment: combination oven ($17,350.04) stove top 24-inch range ($1,385.96); pass-thru refrigerator ($7,910.15); pass - thru heated cabinet ($4,342.27); and 60-inch stainless pass-thru counter ($4,136.23).

Goodwin Brothers for kitchen equipment: convection steamer - gas ($10,956); and titling kettle - gas ($17,385).

+The board approved Superintendent Stephens' request to hire three additional maintenance workers for the summer. In addition, Stephens said construction of the new Clarke County High School would not be completed until mid-spring semester 2008. "There were just things that were a little more complicated than they thought," he said. "They are running a little bit behind."

He also said the recent drought had halted any grass growing at the new baseball field construction, which is expected to be ready for the ball season in 2008. The June 19 rainstorm had forced dirt from the site into the road.

+Stephens said he would not know until November how much money Clarke County will receive from the $1.07 billion bond issue for school construction signed by Gov. Bob Riley on June 13. According to Riley's office, Clarke County will receive $2,875,450 for K-12.

+Eddie Slayton was nominated to the county Board of Equalization.

+The board accepted the following resignations: Marvin Johnston, math teacher, at Clarke County High School, and Lisa Scarbrough, Spanish teacher, at Jackson High School.

+The board accepted employment of the following new staff:

Kim Sheffield, office assistant, at Grove Hill Elementary School;

Dalaine Tinney, special education teacher, at Jackson High School +The next school board meeting will be at 4 p.m. on July 25.
