Eagles soar in all-star game
The games were broken down into a junior's game and a senior's game. In the senior game Jackson Academy's Steven Gilpin and Josh Andrews were on the winning National team. Gilpin played second base and Andrews saw time in left field. Clarke Prep's Clay Furrow and Wesley Morgan played on the American team that lost 5-2 to the Nationals. Furrow got the start at second base. Morgan came on to play third base in the sixth inning. In the junior tilt Clarke Prep School's Taylor Becton and J.D. Powell were on the National team that fell 14-13 to the American team. The Gators' Powell had put the Nationals on top 13-12 in the ninth inning with a 400- foot homer at Riverwalk Stadium. Powell's blast was the only one hit by either squad. Powell started the game at second base, but also saw playing time at third where he had several key put-outs.
The two teams combined for 27 hits in the contest. On the softball side the junior team took on the seniors in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Lagoon Park. In the opener the juniors beat the seniors 8-4. Clarke Prep's Corrie Allen went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs to help pace the team. Fellow Lady Gator Tess Ackerman went 1-for-1 and was also hit by a pitch. Jackson Academy's Evin Bowling got the starting nod behind the plate and went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Bowling squared-off against her seasonlong battery mate Bailey Pringle. Pringle pitched two innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out two.
Ackerman went 1-for-1 and Bowling went 1-for-2 for the juniors. Pringle was walked and scored a run for the seniors as well as pitching one frame, allowing no hits and fanning two batters.
The AISA had stopped hosting an all-star game because of the lack of players due to the game coming after the school year ended. The Coaches Association resurrected the game and added juniors to the mix.
