'Hungry as ever'
The Leroy Bears are working hard in the weight room this summer to ensure they do not become complacent after winning the 2A state championship last season "We are still as hungry as ever," Leroy rising senior Josh Trotter said. "We are going to work hard to try to repeat." Coach Powell agreed with Trotter and talked about how the summer workouts are going. "Things are going great. We have so much going on these days with the kids' schedules. We have some kids playing summer baseball. We have had some attend various football camps. And we have some scheduled to attend some camps in the future. We are working out Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays," Powell said. "We have to keep working hard to avoid the complacency or the 'big head'. I told them right quick they better not go there. We know that nothing is automatic or a given. We think that part of what we can do is outwork other people. We are going to get our kids in here and they are going to work hard when they do get in here." Leroy had 79 players come out for spring practice and a majority of them have been working out all summer. "We are averaging in the low 50s for our workouts everyday. This morning we had about 30. We will have about 15-20 in the afternoon. There are a lot of kids that are working and may not get to make it every time. Some are going to football camps and some have baseball games. But that is okay." The Bears are not only hitting the weights this summer but they are getting ready to play some 7-7 games. Leroy will travel to Clarke County High School on July 2 at 6 p.m. for their first 7-7 game. "We are going to be playing several 7-7 games. We already have three scheduled and we may play two with Thomasville. So that will put us at five. We are going to Gulf Shores and we will have two scheduled with Clarke County. We are allowed to play seven dates and we are going to try to play all seven if we can." Leroy will travel to Gulf Shores on July 6 before Clarke County makes a return trip to Leroy on July 17 at 6 p.m. Leroy will begin fall practice on Aug. 6 before facing off with Washington County High School on Aug. 24 in a pre-season game at Leroy.
Cross-river rival Jackson will travel to Leroy on Aug. 30 to kick-off the 2007 season in the Tombigbee Classic.
