War Tide?
Well that is what just happened in NASCAR. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Gordon are now teammates. What will the "Red Army" think of this? Earnhardt, Jr. left DEI (Dale Earnhardt Incorporated) weeks ago after constant bickering with his stepmom Teresa Earnhardt. After weeks of rampant speculation, "Little E" signed with Hendrick Motorsports' in the biggest free agent deal in NASCAR history. Hendrick Motorsports' most famous driver is none other than Jeff Gordon. The same Jeff Gordon that Earnhardt fans have been known to toss bottles at in Talladega. Although following NASCAR is not one of my passions, I know enough to realize that Earnhardt fans do not like Jeff Gordon. Gordon is one of the most dominant drivers in NASCAR and also one of the most hated drivers especially here in the South. If you take a ride down Hwy. 43 I bet you would have a hard time searching out a lot of Gordons' 24 on the back of any vehicles. Now go see how hard it is to find the number 8 or 3. You get the point? It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out. Maybe this is just the shot in the arm that NASCAR needs. Who knows? One thing for certain is once the two drivers hit the racetrack for the first time next season the ratings will be out the roof. Fans and casual spectators alike will tune in to see what happens. What car will Earnhardt be driving? Will fans at Talladega still toss their beverages at Gordon? Will Gordon and Little E be your next Cagne and Lacey?
I guess we will have to wait and see. But for the meantime, maybe we can practice saying "War Tide" and see if we can get used to it. That is what the "Red Army" is going through.
