Weaver, Caldwell attend Girls State
Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lillian Pugh Andrews Foundation, the girls spent one week as citizens of imaginary states. Weaver, daughter of Lisa and Kenny Weaver of Jackson, was elected mayor of her city, Vulcan City and was honored at a mayor's luncheon on June 6 hosted by Troy University. Caldwell, daughter of Benita and Paul Caldwell of Leroy, was a member of the city of Harper, part of Andrews County. A Federalist and member of the House, she was elected a talent chairman and assisted in preparing for skit night where the city performed a dating game show featuring city members acting as counselors. Miss Caldwell also campaigned for probate judge. The week's activities included speakers Kay Ivey, Alabama State Treasurer, Sam Shaw, Alabama State Auditor, Beth Chapman, Alabama Secretary of State, Sue Bell Cobb, Chief Justice, and author Star Parker. Friday, during a visit to the capitol, they heard Gov. Bob Riley speak. The girls had the privilege of observing the proper method of the burning of the American flag.
Caldwell said, "My experience at Girls State was truly amazing and I am honored to have had the opportunity to go. I made many friends that I will never forget and memories that I will always cherish."
