Ever since he assisted Volunteer Mobile with a hurricane disaster effort several years ago, Charles Singleton has had a dream. That dream became a reality on June 14 when Volunteer Washington County went online.

Judge Singleton wants to "connect those with needs to those who want to help."

That is what Volunteer Washington County is ready to do. Citizens can go to 1-800- volunteer.org, scroll down the list of member organizations, click on Washington County and sign up to assist others or post a need.

Community coordinators are in place for most Washington County communities and they are conduits to reach volunteers when an emergency or need arises. Whatever your interests may be, there is someone who can use your expertise or experience.

Volunteer Washington County is especially interested in compiling a list of all the medical personnel in the county for use during a widespread catastrophe. Another list may include those conversant in a foreign language. Libraries and schools can use the services of retired teachers and volunteers. These are just a few of the examples mentioned by Shirley Singleton.

One of the first projects of Volunteer Washington County will be to compile a list of all ordained ministers. Singleton hopes to have that ready for the expected influx of construction workers at ThyssenKrupp. The judge said that the nursing home, the hospital and the libraries would probably be the first recipients of the services of this organization.

Penny Dendy of Volunteer Mobile said that she had been hoping for years to get a volunteer organization in Washington County. She will be the liaison to Volunteer Mobile which will mentor and assist the Washington County group until they can stand alone.

There was a special tone of satisfaction when Judge Singleton announced, "Washington County is only one of six counties in the state to have such a volunteer organization."
