City of Jackson joins nationwide 'America's Night Out Against Crime'

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, neighborhoods throughout Jackson are invited to join communities nationwide for the "24th Annual National Night Out" (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.

National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the city of Jackson, will involve more than 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. NNO 2007 is being supported in part by TARGET and the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 7 - 10 p.m. on Aug. 7, residents throughout Jackson are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods will be hosting a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities and anticrime rallies.

All residents are encouraged to participate in this event. Any citizen interested in being a "block captain" for your neighborhood and a leader in the organization of your neighborhood's activities call the Jackson Police Department, Deputy Chief Mark Harrell or Stephanie McIntosh, 246- 4484.

The first 12 neighborhoods to sign up will receive a NNO banner to be displayed during their community's event.
