Two arrested for Calvert store robbery Two people have been arrested and charged in the June 8 robbery of a clothing store near Calvert, during which the store's owner was severely cut. Virace Lynn Weaver, 54, and Michelle Clifton, 32, both of Axis, were arrested Wednesday, June 13 and charged with second degree robbery and second degree assault. According to Washington County Sheriff's Department Maj. Kesler Weaver Sr., he received a call from an informant who told him she knew of a female who was claiming to have cut someone in McIntosh. "I thought perhaps the two were connected," said Maj. Weaver. "I decided to follow up on what could be a valid lead and consulted with the investigating officer Dep. Donnie Sullivan." Sullivan obtained warrants and with the help of several Mobile County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested Weaver and Clifton in Axis. The two are accused of robbing the Buyers International Department Store near Calvert around 10 a..m., Friday, June 8, leaving the store's owner Altharis Threatt needing emergency medical attention after she attempted to escape the scene in the suspects' vehicle. Weaver and Clifton allegedly entered the store wearing masks, threatened Threatt and took the cash register. According to witnesses, in an attempt to escape the robbers Threatt exited the store, got into their vehicle and began to drive in circles. The masked male suspect reportedly was able to chase Threatt down and began assaulting her through the open window of the vehicle, eventually pulling her from inside it and cutting her with what is believed to be a pocket knife. Sullivan said the two suspects then fled with the cash register, which was later found nearby at the edge of the woods, broken and emptied. An undetermined amount of cash was taken. Threatt, who suffered at least one severe cut to the underside of one of her arms, was taken to the medical clinic in McIntosh then transported by McIntosh Rescue Squad ambulance to the Ciba helipad where she was flown out by Medivac helicopter to a Mobile hospital. Weaver is being held on $60,000 bond and Clifton was booked on $15,000 bond.
"The arrests of these suspects boils down to teamwork," said Maj. Weaver. He complimented Dep. Sullivan and the Mobile County Sheriff's deputies for working together to apprehend the suspects.
