United Way approves funding for area agencies

The Board of Trustees of United Way of Southwest Alabama recently approved its annual funding to 55 partner agencies, reinvesting more than $4.2 million back into the community from the 2006 campaign.

Funding recommendations were made by teams of volunteers from Mobile, Washington and Clarke counties who serve on the Community Investment Committees.

This marks the second year of a 2-year funding cycle for the United Way partner agencies. United Way provides funding for a broad mix of agencies that respond to the health and human service needs of the community. Accountability and stewardship are achieved through extensive volunteer involvement.

Washington and Clarke counties have separate Community Investment Committees, enabling volunteers living in those areas to participate in the allocation process affecting agencies meeting the needs of their counties. Mel Ann Sullivan, marketing director, First United Security Bank, is the Community Investment Committee chair in Washington County and Brian Leathers, Senior Vice President/ Chief Financial Officer of Acceptance Loans, is the Community Investment Committee chair in Clarke County.
