WashCo reserve deputy dies in crash
By Evan Carden SA Editor

President of the Washington County Sheriff's Department's Reserve Deputy Unit was one of two people killed in an automobile crash around midday, Sunday, June 10.

John Douglas Dorman, 38, and Stephanie Hall Foster, 32, both of Millry, died as a result of a wreck involving three vehicles, which occurred on Nathan Jordan Road, according to the Alabama State Troopers' office.

Foster's daughter, Molly Foster, 8, was critically injured in the crash and is currently being treated at a Mobile hospital.

While details of the wreck were unknown by Tuesday's press deadline, information released by the Alabama State Troopers Grove Hill Post indicates that the three vehicles involved were a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Foster, a 1994 Isuzu pickup driven by Dorman and a 2004 Toyota driven by Ronald Dewayne Taylor, 36, of Chunchula. Taylor and a passenger in his vehicle, Brandon Taylor, 5, also of Chunchula, were injured in the crash and treated at a hospital in Waynesboro, Miss.

Dorman joined the Washington County Sheriff Department's Reserve Deputy Unit when Sheriff Richard Stringer took office Jan. 15 of this year. The sheriff appointed him president of the unit, which took on the responsibility of patrolling Old St. Stephens Historic Park.

"There were many times when reserve officers were needed for functions and other responsibilities and if there was no one else to take on the task, John would be there," Stringer said Monday. "He donated a lot of hours of his own time to provide services that would normally require overtime by our regular deputies. It is important to note that our reserve force saves the taxpayers of this county a lot of money and they should be thanked for their efforts. John and his dedication will be truly missed and he will be hard to replace."

Besides being a reserve deputy, Dorman was a member of the Copeland Assembly of God Church, Chatom Mason Lodge, the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police and served as an election official for the Copeland box. He was employed as a millwright with Brown and Root.

Dorman leaves behind a wife and two sons. (See The South Alabamian's obituaries on page 2A for survivors and funeral service details.)
