Alabama All-Stars dominate
Alabama didn't waste any time in proving they were the stronger team as after a quick three and out by the Alabama defense the Alabama offense marched 61 yards in seven plays to take the early lead. Former Prattville quarterback Larry Smith effortlessly went 3-5 for 45 yards capping the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ralph Spry. Graham Sutter's point after was good for the 7-0 Alabama lead. The two teams traded punts on the next few series before the Alabama squad got on the board again at the 11:24 mark in the second quarter when Oxford's Charles McClain snatched a tip pass out of the air and scampered 25 yards to pay dirt and a 14- 0 Alabama lead.
Graham Sutter added a 40-yard field goal with time running out in the half to give the Alabama All-Stars a commanding 17- 7 halftime lead. Alabama ran away with the game in the second half outscoring Mississippi 34-7. Larry Smith earned the game's Offensive MVP completing 12-26 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Rolondo McClain was named the Defensive MVP recording one solo tackle, three assists and a blocked punt. The area was well represented with two area coaches coaching in the game in Leroy's Danny Powell and Sweet Water's Stacy Luker. The two coaches respectively won the state championships in 1A and 2A in football with Powell also bringing in the 2A baseball crown for the Leroy Bears. "We had a fun week but a busy week," Leroy Coach Danny Powell said of his time coaching the Alabama All-Stars. "We didn't have a lot of downtime. We were either practicing football or working with the kids in some capacity the whole week. We had some great kids and I really enjoyed working with them."
"I was very fortunate to be selected to coach in this game and really enjoyed working with Coach Bill Clark (Prattville) and the assistants, especially Stacy Luker (Sweet Water). It gives our program a lot of recognition and proves that we are one of the premier programs in Class 2A," Powell said.
