Mrs. Ruth Everett, age 90, began Memorial Day Commemoration some 15-18 years ago, at historic Andrews Chapel (built 1860) in McIntosh.

On Sunday, May 27 (and for several years now) that tradition has been carried on through the leadership of Adell Rivers. Flags were presented as names of veterans from the War Between the States through the Vietnam War were called. If family members were present, they accepted the flag on behalf of the deceased veteran.

There was no need for air conditioning in the chapel for a brisk breeze provided by the cross-ventilation of propped-windows kept the one-room church comfortable. Mrs. Cookie Kellam accompanied the congregational hymns on an antique pump organ. And attendees sat on very old hand-hewn pews.

The guest speaker was Bill Taylor, former police chief of Jackson and a U.S. Marshall assigned to the Mobile office. Taylor stressed that Americans must support their troops wherever they are serving.

After the service, the flags were placed at the veterans' graves. The memorial service is sponsored by the McIntosh Methodist Church and is an annual event on the Sunday preceding Memorial Day.
