Standoff with deputies ends peacefully A standoff with a 21-year-old Grove Hill man ended peacefully early Saturday morning after gunshots were fired. Chief Deputy Vergil Chapman explained that family members were looking for Jon Keegan Hamilton and Clarke County Sheriff's deputies Rob Bost and Frankie Crawford agreed to help. Hamilton was discovered about 2:45 a.m. in his SUV on Ford Road going into the river camp community of Little Grove Hill north of Coffeeville. Hamilton was staying at a camp there with friends. Bost reported that Hamilton drove off at a high rate of speed into a clear-cut. He drove back up onto the roadway and crashed into a power pole guy-wire and tree stump. Hamilton reportedly fired one or two shots from the vehicle, but the shots were apparently upward into the air. Bost and Crawford called for assistance and a number of lawmen including Sheriff Bobby Moore and District Attorney Spence Walker came to the scene. Hamilton's father, Billy Hamilton, had been out of the area but came to the scene and the younger Hamilton got out of the vehicle. Billy Hamilton said his son was asleep when he approached the vehicle. A rifle was confiscated from the SUV. Hamilton was charged with DUI, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. He was released from jail late Saturday afternoon. He is a student at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa but was home for the weekend.
Chapman said he was glad that the matter ended without lawmen or Hamilton being hurt or killed.
