Bears take 2A state title

The Leroy Bears brought home their second baseball championship with a two-game sweep of the Hatton Hornets in Montgomery this past week.

In game one, Taylor White pitched six innings of three-hit ball to shutout the Hornets 8-0. Brittian Schultz came on in relief for the seventh inning. He struck out one en route to a three-up-threedown inning giving Leroy game one.

White went 2-3 with two RBIs on the day while Brandon Jones went 2-3 with three RBIs. Phillip Ervin went 2-2 with two runs scored. Chris Weaver added a big hit, which turned into a monster two-run home run in the fourth inning. Grant Brown, Matthew Watkins and Clint Moseley also added hits for Leroy. Nathan Berryman, Chris Hutto and Matthew Dudley grabbed the three hits for Hatton.

Leroy scored two runs in the third and six more in the fourth to romp the Hornets of Hatton.

Will Nichols took the loss for Hatton. He went four innings complete, allowed eight runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three. Cody Cantrell pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on three hits.

In game two, Leroy scored three, while Hatton scored one in the second. The final score of the second game of the Class 2A finals was 3-1 in favor of Coach Danny Powell's Leroy Bears.

Jones went six innings for Leroy, gaving up one run on five hits, three walks and five strike outs. Moseley pitched the final inning of the state championship game, earning his seventh save of the season. He went one inning alloweing no hits and struck out Zeke Nichols looking to end the game and give Leroy the 2A crown. Moseley also went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Watkins' two-run single in the second gave Leroy all they would need to claim the title. White and Brown also added hits for Leroy in game two.

Dudley took the seven-inning loss for the Hornets. He gave up three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out seven.

By going 3-6 on the series and earning the three-hit win in game one, Taylor White earned Most Valuable Player honors for the 2007 2A state games.

Leroy ended their season at 37-7. They started the season 1-4 and followed that by going 36-3 to finish the season. Two of the final three losses came to 5A and 6A schools at the Gulf Shores Nike Classic.
