Area Obituaries Mollye Sharp Callahan Mollye Sharp Callahan (November 9, 1939 - May 16, 2007) from Jackson, Ala. went on to meet her Savior at the age of 67. She had fought a long, courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease). Her faith in God and His promises kept her strong. She blessed and comforted others as much as they comforted her. She was preceded in death by her son, David Callahan, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Sharp and her brother, Glenn Sharp. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Billy Callahan of Jackson; her son, Mark Callahan of Jackson; daughter, Carol Callahan Beverly of Huntsville; and four grandchildren. She also has two brothers, Charles Sharp of Biloxi, Miss. and Larry Sharp of Atlanta, Ga. She graduated from Mississippi State and became a teacher of advanced math, English and Spanish. She taught at Jackson Academy for many years and also tutored many children at home. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Jackson where she taught Sunday School and Bible studies. Her greatest joy was serving in the mission fields in Nicaragua, Mexico and Costa Rica. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jackson Nicaragua Missions Fund, 214 College Ave., Jackson, AL 36545 or to the ALS Association, P.O. Box 2888, Huntsville, AL 35805. Visitation was Saturday, May 19, 2007 at First Baptist Church of Jackson from 12:30 p.m. until the 2 p.m. service. Interment was in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Jackson, Ala. Pallbearers were William J. Colvin III, Gay DeWitt, David Lazenby, Harvey Little, Vaughn Stough and Arlen York. Arrangements by Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson, Alabama. Harry Andrew Scogin III Harry Andrew "Bud" Scogin III, 70, president of Scogin Motors, Inc., died Monday, May 14, 2007 at his residence. He was a native of Omaha, Neb. and resident of Jackson. Mr. Scogin was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson as well as being Clerk of the Session. He is a former member and past president of the Jackson Rotary Club and member of the Clarke County Republican Executive Committee. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Suzanne L. Scogin of Jackson; two sons, Mark Andrew (Gaynor) Scogin of Tuscaloosa and Ronald Lake (Ann) Scogin of Jackson; a daughter, Wendy Suzanne (Roger) Nelson of Jackson; sister, Sherrie (Neil) Perkins of Dallas, Texas; and seven grandchildren. A private memorial service has been held. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, P.O. Box 355, Jackson, AL 36545. Arrangements were made by Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson Laura Lee McKee Pearson Laura Lee McKee Pearson died at the age of 93 at the family home in Leroy, Ala. on May 16, 2007. She graduated from Huntingdon College with a degree in physical education. While at Huntingdon, she was a swimming instructor and May Queen. Following graduation, she taught school in Abbeville, Ala. eventually returning to Leroy where she helped establish the still-ongoing tradition of Leroy High School's Miss Football. She married Theodore Bowling Pearson in 1939, eventually succeeding his mother as postmaster in Leroy. She served as postmaster until her retirement in 1980. Laura Pearson had a quiet, but strong faith that was the foundation of everything she did. She was a lifelong member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. The most important thing in Laura Pearson's life was her family. She gave unselfishly to her entire family and community. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Theodore B. Pearson. She is survived by four children, Theodore Bowling (Karen) Pearson Jr., Spanish Fort, Ala.; John Richmond (Elizabeth) Pearson, Leroy, Ala.; Sarah (George Lear) Pearson, Raleigh, N.C., and William Gibbs Beatty (Kim) Pearson, Fairhope, Ala.; nine grandchildren, Laura Lee Pearson, Lindee Adelle Gartman, Lee Elizabeth Pearson, Kathryn Bowling Pearson, Theodore Bowling Pearson III, Martin Richmond Pearson, Turner Gibbs Pearson, Sarah Greer Pearson and Robert Forrest Pearson; seven greatgrandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Visitation was held on Friday, May 18, 2007 from 4 - 6 p.m. at Pine Grove Methodist Church in Leroy with the memorial service at 6 p.m. Burial followed at the Bowling Family Cemetery. Johnny Sargent Johnny Sargent, a native and resident of Frankville, died May 21, 2007 at the home of his sister, Cora Martin. Mr. Sargent was 64 years of age. He was a member of Church of the Living God in Coffeeville. Earlier in life he resided in Tampa, Fla. where he retired from Robbins Manufacturing Company. Survivors include his wife, Mable Causey Sargent of Vinegar Bend; two stepsons, Shawn Sargent and Aaron Sargent, both of Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Miranda Durr of Magee, Miss. and Felecia (Ricky) Britt of Enterprise; stepdaughter, Dawn (Marzette) McKinnis of Warrensburg, Miss.; two brothers, Woodrow (Jessie) Sargent of Tacoma, Wash. and Richard (Etta) Sargent of Thomasville; two sisters, Cora (Earl) Martin and Rosie (Daniel) Barnes, both of Frankville; and 13 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 26, 11 a.m. at the True Light Baptist Church in Koenton officiated by the Rev. Austin Kidd, pastor. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service and following the eulogy. Burial will be in the Easy Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being directed by Andrews Funeral Home of Jackson. Alvin Fox Alvin Fox, a native of Jackson and resident of Bronx, N.Y., died at the age of 58 at his residence on May 13, 2007. He was employed at New York Hospital for 34 years. Survivors include his mother, Earsell Fox of Jackson; son, Nekia (Amy) Robinson of Bronx; two daughters, Stacy Robinson and Kesisha Robinson, both of Bronx; sister, Authorine Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; seven brothers, Willie Fox and Peter (Tanya) Fox, both of Decatur, Ill., J.D. (Linda) Fox of Citronelle, L.E. (Mary Lee) Fox of Leroy, Ledell (Brenda) Fox of Bronx, Robert (Yana) Fox and Clausell (Carolyn) Fox, both of Mobile; three grandchildren and six uncles. Services were held May 19 at the New St. Matthew Baptist Church of Choctaw Bluff with the Rev. Kelvin Boykin, pastor, and Dr. Henry Roberts, officiating minister. Interment was in the Antioch A.M.E. Cemetery in Alma under the direction of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson. James Levert Powell Sr. James Levert Powell Sr., 59, died May 14, 2007 due to a traffic accident. A resident of Whatley, he was employed with CTS Construction Company of Monroeville as a truck driver. Mr. Powell was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church of Whatley and served as a deacon. He is survived by his wife Linda Powell of Whatley; mother Mary Caldwell of Allen; daughter Tanya (Alfred) Lee of Monroeville; eight sons, James (Yolanda) Powell Jr. of Whatley, Mario (Adriane) of Indiana, Ivan (Nanetta) of St. Roberts, Mo., Patrick Berry, Tommy (Roslyn) Berry and William Berry, all of Amityville, N.Y., Willie McGowin and James McGowin, both of Flint, Mich.; two brothers, Ben E. Powell and Charles Powell, both of Wagarville; 10 sisters, Barbara (Sam) King and Ruby Thomas Powell, both of Amityville, Dora (Calvin) Jackson of Barlow Bend, Sonya Powell of Citronelle, Rose (Charles) Reed, Barbara (Albert) Bragg, Cheryl Powell, Kimberly (Rodney) Jackson, Marsha Powell and Nellie Powell, all of Wagarville; 12 grandchildren; and stepmother Cassie Powell of Wagarville.
Services were held on Sunday, May 20 at the Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Agee, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Lynum officiating. Interment followed in the Hill Cemetery of Whatley with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing.
