LHS, WCHS, MHS head to Montgomery
Houston Academy Using their exploding offense, Leroy came from 10-5 and 7-0 down to defeat Houston Academy in two games. Leroy swept the doubleheader with 15- 10 and 10-8 wins over the Raiders. With these wins, the Bears advance to the Class 2A state championship games on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Hatton Hornets from Lawrence County. The last time Leroy went to play at Patterson Field in Montgomery in 2001, they defeated the Green Wave of Gordo. It was also the second time in five and a half months that a team from Leroy knocked off a Raider team in a semifinals game. "It is nice to get back to Montgomery," said Leroy Head Coach Danny Powell. "This was suppose to be a rebuilding year as we lost five seniors and all of our pitching from last season. We had three sophomores and a freshman starting, but have swung the bats well. Houston Academy swung the bats well too, and this was a great place to hit the ball." The teams combined for 47 runs and 56 hits in the two-game series. In the opening game at Northcutt Field, Taylor White went 5-5 with three RBIs. Clint Moseley had three hits while Grant Brown, Brandon Jones and Stephen Scoggins all added two hits. Brown drove in three runs and Scoggins drove in two. Leroy finished the second game with 15 hits. Three of those from Moseley while White, Jones, Chris Weaver, Matthew Watkins and Phillip Ervin all finished with two. "We do not have any 'quit' in us, we know we can swing the bat and score runs," said Powell. "All of our players are hitting .300 or better. We teach it one pitch at a time. We feel we can score runs, so we do not panic." Millry vs Providence Christian The Millry Wildcats took two out of three from No. 4 Providence Christian to become the third team from Washington County to advance to the state championship this year. Millry will face No. 1 Hackleburg in the best two out of three championship series. Providence Christian took game one from the Wildcats 4 - 2, scoring all of their runs in the third inning. Millry was led by Taylor Owen and Chris Cherry each with two hits and a run scored. Dylan Whitsett drove in both runs for the Wildcats. In game two, trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, the Wildcats were facing elimination. Millry rallied for four runs in the inning and held off the Eagles 5-3 to force a deciding game three. The Wildcats were led by Stanton Sullivan with two hits and a RBI and Heath McIlwain with two RBIs and a run scored. Ethan Chancey also had a RBI. Owen picked up the win for the Wildcats, scattering six hits in seven innings of work and striking out six. In game three, the Wildcats fell behind 2-0 as Providence pushed a run across in the first and third innings. Millry tied it up in the third as McIlwain had a RBI on a sacrifice fly and Chris Cherry had a RBI double in the inning. Millry took the lead for good in the fourth as Whitsett had a big two-out two-RBI single and McIlwain followed him with a RBI-double for a 5-2 lead. Providence pushed two runs across in the fifth but that was as close as they would get as Millry added one in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to take it 9-4. Allen Guy was 2-3 with two runs scored and McIlwain and Whitsett had two RBIs apiece to lead the Wildcats. Hunter Martin picked up the win for Millry, pitching a complete game giving up four hits and four runs. Geneva vs Washington County W.C.H.S. is headed to the state championship in baseball for the first time in school history. The Bulldogs swept two games from the No. 4 Geneva Panthers 6-3 and 4-3 to win their semifinal matchup. The Bulldogs fed off of their large contigent of fans that equalled or even outnumbered the home standing Geneva fans. Washington County jumped out to early leads in both games, scoring three runs in the first inning of game one and two runs in the first inning of game two. Drake Warr, Kyle Pennington and Kyle Dees did the rest on the mound, allowing only nine hits for the series. In game one Warr took the mound and continued his playoff production. Warr pitched five innings giving up three runs on three hits and running his playoff record to 3-0. Pennington came in and pitched two innings of nohit ball to pick up the save. At the plate the Dawgs were led by Dees, who was 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Zac Turner, who was 3-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Matt Jackson also had a RBI. In game two Dees got the start and pitched a complete game limiting the Panthers to three runs on six hits. Pennington led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs scored.
