Wildfire smoke covers local area The smoke and haze that covered the area Monday, May 14, was not from any fires in the area, but a result of high winds blowing from the east carrying smoke from the wildfires plaguing Georgia and Florida. The faint smell of burned woods was evident, although the fires that caused the haze are hundreds of miles away. Visibility warnings were issued in the region, along with cautions for those with respiratory ailments to stay inside. Pollution monitors in Pensacola, Fla. showed a climbing level of poor air quality throughout the day, reporting that it reached the orange alert level by mid-afternoon. This made things even more difficult for those who are sensitive to air pollution. The smoke had been blowing south toward Miami or north toward Atlanta and Chattanooga, but a change in the weather patterns shifted the flow toward the south Alabama area.
The National Weather Service issued a low visibility warning for Tuesday following a rating of between two and five for Monday, due to the mixing of the smoke with fog overnight.
