Gov. Bob Riley made the announcement Friday, in a 10:30 a.m. press conference, that German steel makers ThyssenKrupp had chosen Calvert over a site in Louisiana for its massive steel plant.

Local leaders from Washington, Mobile, Clarke and other surrounding counties were ecstatic. Riley referred to the decision as a "once in a generation event," saying that it has the potential to transform the southwest region of the state which has experienced high unemployment rates for many years.

Site work is scheduled to begin in less than 30 days, with construction planned to start this coming fall. The construction of the massive plant will be done in phases, employing at least 2,700 construction workers over the next three years.

Expected start-up for the plant will be in 2010.
