Bears continue as Wildcats fall
By Jeremy Sellers SA Reporter

The Millry Wildcats defeated the Providence Christian Eagles last week to advance to the State 1-A championship series in Montgomery. They were defeated by Hackleburg in a best two out of three series Tuesday.
The Leroy Bears won their opening game in the 2A state championship over the Hatton Hornets 8-0. The deciding game was played on Wednesday afternoon, but results were unavailable at press time.

Leroy used the third and fourth innings to put up their runs, scoring two in the third and six in the fourth.

In Leroy's half of the third, Phillip Ervin and Matthew Watkins scored giving Leroy the 2-0 edge over the Hornets.

Leroy's Taylor White went 2-3 with two RBIs while Brandon Jones went 2-3 with three RBIs. Chris Weaver had one hit on the night, however it was about a 360-foot bomb over the left field fence, which was a two-run home run. Grant Brown also added a RBI on the evening.

White got the win in game one for Leroy. He went six innings, giving up three hits and striking out three batters. Brittian Schultz came in to close the game in the seventh. He threw seven pitches to retire the Hornets in grabbing the game one victory.

Will Nichols took the loss for Hatton. He went four innings, giving up seven hits and eight runs. He walked three Leroy batters.

Millry vs. Hackleburg

The Millry Wildcats fell in their first game against the Hackleburg Panthers 4-2 at the hands of ace pitcher John McKinney. The Panthers put up two runs in the first, followed by one in the second and another in the fifth.

Millry's two runs came in the fourth inning when Dylan Whitsett and Ethan Chance came around to score when Hunter Martin's two-out fly ball was dropped by the Hackleburg center fielder.

In the second game of the three-game series, the Wildcats fell to Hackleburg 11-1. After adding three in the first two innings, they would tack on eight more in the fourth through seventh innings.

Millry would keep the game going as they scored their one run in the sixth inning to avoid the mercy rule going into effect.

The Wildcats came to Montgomery as a socalled 'cinderella' team, ending their year with a 19-24 record. They entered the playoffs at 12- 21. In the process, they knocked off the No. 4, No. 2 and No. 9 teams.

"At the beginning of the season, I would have never pictured us being here, but as the season progressed, I saw the possibility," said Millry Head Coach Shane Hendry.
