Washington County advances to Quarters
By Kyle Morris SA Correspondent

Washington County continued their hot-hitting to sweep Gordo 12-0 and 8-7. Seven Bulldogs are batting .300 or better in the playoffs led by senior Kyle Dees, who is hitting .579 with two home runs, five RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Last weekend's series had a little bit of everything to offer. From the offensive firepower and great pitching in game one to the late-inning drama of game two. In game one, Drake Warr took the mound for the Bulldogs and totally baffled the Gordo hitters on his way to a five-inning, two-hit shutout. The Bulldog offense gave Warr more than enough runs to work with for the 12-0 win. Maurice Leverett and Kyle Dees both had three-run home runs in the game to lead the Dawgs offensively. Also, Kyle Pennington went 2-4 with three runs scored.

In game two, the Bulldogs fell behind early as Gordo pushed a run across in the first to claim a 1-0 lead. Washington County took the lead in the third off of back-to-back solo home runs from Kyle Pennington and Kyle Dees.

That lead would be short lived as Gordo scored six runs in the top of the fourth with the big blow being a grand slam from lead-off hitter Casey Hall to take a 7-2 lead. The Bulldogs were down but not out, they began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth with Trey Courington's solo home run that brought them to within four.

Pennington, who had come on in relief in the fourth, shut the Green Wave down, striking out seven of the next 13 batters he faced. While Pennington was mowing down Gordo batters, the Bulldogs' offense was clawing their way back into the game. After Pennington and Dees singled, Matt Jackson got a RBI single to knock in Pennington.

Trey Courington followed Jackson with a two-RBI single to bring the Dawgs to within one at 7-6 at the end of five innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the Bulldogs still trailing by a run and down to their last out, Tyler Dykes came to bat with runners on the corners. Dykes fell behind 0-2, but the next pitch sailed high and the runner on first, Dezmond Turner, broke for second. On the throw down to second, Kez Cooper scored from third, drawing a throw to the plate, Turner took third on the throw home.

With the score now tied at 7, Dykes stepped back in. He hit a bouncer back to third and the third baseman threw the ball wide of first base forcing the first baseman to pull his foot off the bag and allowing the winning run to score.

Kyle Pennington picked up the win in relief, going 3 and 2/3 innings striking out eight. The Bulldogs were led at the plate by Trey Courington, who was 2-4 with three RBIs. Pennington was 2-4 with a RBI and Dees was 2-3 with a RBI. T.J. Atchison and Matt Jackson also had a RBI a piece.

Washington County travels to Geneva Friday for a best of 3 series with the winner advancing to the state championship at Patterson Field in Montgomery. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m. with the second game immediately following the first. Game three is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday if necessary.
