Sheriff's Department investigating theft of riding mower in Leroy
By Evan Carden SA Editor

The Washington County Sheriff's Department is investigating the theft of a riding lawn mower from the home of a Leroy man in late April.

Clyde Mott, who lives on Carson Road, said he left his John Deere riding mower parked in his yard near his shed on April 27 and left home to run an errand.

When he returned home his wife, who had been at home told him she happened to look out the window and see a black man in an older model blue Chevrolet pickup driving from their property with her husband's mower on a trailer he was pulling.

Mott reported the theft to the Washington County Sheriff's Department and Deputy John Traylor was sent to investigate. As of Tuesday's press time, no further information was available concerning the theft.

Sheriff Richard Stringer said he was aware that there has been an ongoing problem with similar thefts in Mississippi near the Washington County, Ala. line, but could not say if the Leroy theft was related to those thefts in any way.
