MedEvac helicopter lands on Highway 43 near Cricket Hill Traffic was halted on the southbound side of U.S. 43 near Malcolm, for awhile Saturday afternoon, while a MedEvac helicopter landed in the highway in an attempt to save the life of a man suffering from full cardiac arrest. According to Bobby Coleman, a volunteer dispatcher for the McIntosh Rescue Squad, he received a call that a Bates' Lake man had passed out and was turning blue around 2:30 p.m., May 5. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene, with rescue squad members Alan Rutledge, Stacey Rutledge, Candy Davidson and Randy Davidson responding. Dispatcher Beverly Dorman was also on duty and assisted during the call. When they arrived, the man was in full cardiac arrest and MedEvac was called. With little time to spare, the decision was made to land the helicopter on the highway at Cricket Hill instead of attempting to transport the patient to the Ciba helipad, which is the usual rendezvous location for medical emergency situations in the area.
McIntosh Police Officers Melvin Thomas and Rico House responded to the scene and stopped traffic while the landing was made. The patient was flown to the University of South Alabama (USA) Medical Center. His condition was unknown at press time.
