Mark Your Calendar 'Readers Are Leaders' parade May 11 The 2nd annual "Readers Are Leaders" Accelerated Reader parade will stroll through downtown Jackson on Friday, May 11 at 9 a.m. More than 190 students from Gillmore Elementary School and Jackson Intermediate School who have reached their Accelerated Reader goals throughout the year will march. City and county leaders have been invited to participate. The parade will begin at the corner of West Rose Street and College Avenue and will proceed to city hall. The public is invited to line the sidewalks and show their support for the students for their achievements. MOWA Choctaw Pow-Wow June 14 The MOWA Choctaw Pow- Pow committee invites all Native American military veterans along with active or inactive military personnel to participate in the annual Pow-Wow parade on Thursday, June 14 at 4 p.m. The parade begins at the intersection of Highway 96 and Red Fox Road in Mt. Vernon. All past tribal mothers are asked to attend. Taking bids The committee is also taking sealed bids on operating the tribe's concession stand at the upcoming Pow-Wow, June 14- 16. Deadline for bids is Thursday, May 31 at 6 p.m. Applications for Princess Pageant The committee is now taking applications for contestants for this year's Princess Pageant. Deadline is also May 31 at 6 p.m. Horse Whisperer Paul Daily to speak May 21 Horse Whisperer Paul Daily will be at the Thomasville Horse Arena for one night only, Monday, May 21. The session is free to the public. Concessions will be available. Everyone should bring a lawn chair. The arena is located at the intersection of Industrial Drive and Old Highway 5. Go up Highway 43 N, to Thomasville, make a right on Industrial Drive and right on Old Highway 5. Hometown Idol planned at July 4th celebration in Chatom The Chatom Community Center is sponsoring a Hometown Idol for their Fourth of July celebration. The live entertainment will be selected by a panel of judges. Soloists, groups, bands, choirs, etc., must send in a video tape, VHS or DVD performing the song or act they will present live. All video tapes must be received before or by June 1. Rules and regulations apply. Many will enter but only a few will be selected. There will be fun, food and fireworks beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4. Back by popular demand will be the Miss Red, White and Blue Pageant, BMX bicycle stunt show, DK BMX, which includes high energy music and audience participation and high flying BMX action. Kids' activities are free and will include face painting by BB the Clown, the rock wall, bouncy joust, mini obstacle course, T-ball and bouncy slide. A variety of food booths will available. Heart of Dixie Collector's Club meeting The Heart of Dixie Collector's Club meeting will be Monday, May 21, 6 p.m. at Jackson Steakhouse. Guest speaker will be Steve Merideth, a lithics expert from the University of Alabama. Visitors are welcome. Bring stone artifacts for identification, especially Clovis or fluted points. CCA board meeting The Community Action Agency will be conducting a Policy Council Executive Committee (PCEC) and Board of Directors Executive Committee (BDEC) meeting on Tuesday, May 15 at the central office in Daphne at 26440 N. Pollard Road. The PCEC meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the BDEC at 10 a.m. Information regarding the Coffeeville Head Start Program will be discussed. CCERA The Clarke County Education Retirees Association (CCERA) has, through careful attention to the criteria, achieved the level of excellence in its operations and programs to be designated a unit of Excellence for the 2006-2007 program year. The award was received during the annual meeting, March 13, 2007, at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center in Birmingham. This is the second year in a row that the CCERA has received the award. The final meeting for the 2006-2007 program year will be May 17, 11:45 a.m. at Ryan's in Thomasville. The program will be presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Hostesses will be Diane Downey, Alberta Dixon, Arengia Knight and Lena Carol Bishop. All active, inactive and associate members are urged to attend. Four-wheeler ride and horse show There will be a four-wheeler ride and horse show on Saturday, May 19 at Sunflower Ball Field in Sunflower. Admission is $7 adults and $3 children. First ride will begin at 10 a.m. It is "ride at your own risk" and is sponsored by the Mt. Shady A.M.E. Zion Church Pastor's Aide Club. Upscale Treasures Sale May 12 The Mobile Museum of Art will be conducting their "Upscale Treasures Sale" on Saturday, May 12 at 4415 Old Shell Road, next door to BankTrust. Auditions scheduled May 10-12 Auditions for "Everyman, The Musical" are scheduled for Thursday (today) and Friday, May 10 -11 from 3-5 p.m. and Saturday, May 12, 1-5 p.m. at the Clarke County High School Auditorium in Grove Hill. "Everyman" is a musical comedy based on the 16th Century Morality (Church) Play. Rehearsals will begin in June and continue through the third week in July. Performances will be July 20-22. Talented teens in Clarke and surrounding counties who can act, sing or dance, should tryout. Auditions should include a oneminute monologue, a song sung acapella and a reading from the script. JHS Class of 1987 meeting The Jackson High School Class of 1987 will be conducting a reunion meeting on Sunday, May 20, 3 p.m. at Visitation Catholic Church in Jackson. The reunion is set for July 21 at the VFW Club in Jackson. The fee for attending the reunion is $75 and is due by June 1. Children's Summer Art Camp The Mobile Museum of Art will conduct a weeklong art camp for children ages 7-12, July 30 through Aug. 3 in Grove Hill. Children will meet Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until noon with art instructors from the Mobile Museum of Art. Work will include oils, watercolors and other art mediums. Contact Terry L. Neugent family reunion May 27 The Neugent families are planning their 7th reunion on Sunday, May 27 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Old Lock One Park.
