WCHS Bulldogs head for quarterfinals in Gordo

W.C.H.S. is headed to the quarterfinals of the state baseball playoffs. Washington County defeated the Beulah Bobcats 5-3 in the first round and beat Montgomery Academy, the No. 2 team in the state, 9-2 and 9-5 to win the best-of-three series with the Eagles.

In the game last Tuesday against Beulah, the Bulldogs pulled ahead quickly.With the bases loaded in the first, Zac Turner got a two-RBI single to give the Dawgs the early lead. Beulah battled back and tied it with two solo home runs, one in the second and one in the fourth. W.C.H.S took the lead for good in the sixth when Kyle Pennington laid down a swinging bunt to drive in a run, on the play the catcher threw the ball away allowing another run to score.

Later in the inning T.J. Atchison scored on a passed ball to make it 5-2. Beulah scored a run in the seventh, but with the tying run on firstt base, Kyle Dees got out of the inning with a groundout back to the mound. Dees pitched a complete game allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out nine. Pennington and Turner led the Dawgs offensively with two RBIs apiece.

Friday the Bulldogs hosted Montgomery Academy in the second round of the playoffs. Washington County fell behind early as Montgomery Academy's Thomas Tyson led off the game with a home run. The Eagles added another run in the third off a Washington County error fora 2-0 lead. Washington County caught fire in the bottom of the third with four runs. Kyle Pennington led off the inning with a home run to pull the Dawgs to within one. Kyle Dees got a single and stole second on a passed ball. Drake Warr moved him to third with a sacrifice grounder. Matt Jackson doubled Dees in for his first RBI of the game. Trey Courington singled to knock in Jackson and T.J. Atchison had a RBI single to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead. W.C.H.S. added five more runs in the next three innings for the final score of 9-2. Four of those runs came off the bat of Matt Jackson. Jackson hit a pair of two-run homers, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, and finished the game 4 -4 with five RBIs. T.J. Atchison was 2 -3 with two RBIs and Trey Courington was 2 - 4 with an RBI.

Drake Warr pitched a complete game giving up only one earned run and five hits.

In the second game, Washington County took advantage of Montgomery Academy errors to take an early lead. The Bulldogs scored three runs on two passed balls. Kyle Pennington scored the first and Kyle Dees and Drake Warr scored on the second. After Dees scored his run the catcher threw the ball away trying to throw it to the pitcher covering home that allowed Warr to score.

Montgomery Academy scored a run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. W.C.H.S. fired back in the third scoring two more runs as Trey Courington and Zac Turner had RBI singles in the inning. Montgomery would not go away quietly though, scoring two runs in the third, one in the 4th and one in the fifth to tie the game at five.

Washington County took control of the game for good in the sixth capitalizing on Montgomery errors to plate four runs for the final score of 9 - 5. Kyle Dees came on in the seventh to close the game out and got the Eagles to go down 1-2-3.

Drew Taylor was the winning pitcher coming on in relief in the fourth and pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing one hit and no runs. Kyle Dees was 3-4 with three runs scored and Zac Turner was 2-4 with a RBI. T.J. Atchison also had an RBI.

Washington County travels to Gordo Friday for a best-of-three series with the Green Wave
