Ciba sponsors performances in Washington County schools

Students at McIntosh Elementary enjoyed a concert performed by the Mobile Symphony's Silverwood Quartet. This is the seventh year Ciba has sponsored the concerts for students in Washington County.
Ciba Specialty Chemicals sponsored performances by the Silverwood Quartet of the Mobile Symphony in Washington County schools, April 30 and May 1.

The Silverwood Quartet, a string and flute ensemble, performed for students at Leroy, McIntosh, Fruitdale, Chatom and Millry. The ensemble featured flutist Andra Bohnet, violinist Tom Morley, violist Jonathan Clark and cellist Barbara Gabriel. Their performances included classical works as well as compositions by modern composers, and even popular movie themes.

"It's great to see how excited the students get when they see and hear the music being created," said Denise Taylor, manager of Ciba's Community Relations. This in-school performance program has been a successful educational outreach of the symphony in Washington County. "This is the seventh year for Ciba to sponsor this program. It remains popular with teachers and students, so we continue bringing the musicians back," Taylor added.

Jamie Eddy, a junior at Leroy High School, gets an opportunity to play Barbara Gabriel's cello. Barbara is a member of the Mobile Symphony and the Silverwood Quartet.
The musicians performed a lively mix of music from around the world and interacted with students to get them involved in the musical experience. They combined humor with explanations about how their instruments work, how they produce certain sounds and how sounds combine to form harmonies.
