Promise Theater and Performing Arts Center offering summer program

Clarke County's new cultural arts center, The Promise Theater and Performing Arts Center, has several events planned for the summer.

Summer Drama Camp registration began May 1. Weekly sessions will include beginner acting, advanced acting, creative dramatics, storytelling, acting for musical theater, theater dance, voice and movement classes, acting for the camera and modeling.

There will also be adult acting classes for students age 18 and up. Kim Tooks, star of stage and screen and acting teacher, will direct these classes.

Classes begin June 11 and continue through Aug. 3.

A gospel concert fund-raiser is planned for May 5 at 6 p.m. Robert Copeland from the Sensational Nightingales will host this benefit gospel concert. Locals will include the Jackson Male Chorus, Ed Davis, Clarke County High School Choir and others. For more information, call 246-2986.

Auditions for the musical, "Everyman" will be May 10-12, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Clarke County High School. Teens are invited to audition. Rehearsals will take place in July with performances July 20, 21 and 22.

The musical is sponsored by the Grove Hill Arts Council and Promise Theater and Performing Arts Center.

Pioneer Women of the Old West is scheduled for May 31 with Kim Tooks and friends. "Stories about pioneer women will entertain and educate you," said a spokesman for Promise Theater. Another gospel concert is planned for June 3, and "Dancing Under the Stars" with live music and ballroom style dancing will conclude the summer's events.
