Groundwater Festival at Ciba for WashCo fourth grade students

Local fourth grade students are in for a big treat on May 4. They will participate in the second annual Groundwater Festival at Ciba Specialty Chemicals in McIntosh.

The Groundwater Festival is a one day event provided for fourth grade students and teachers. The event educates students about all aspects of groundwater and other related natural resources (i.e., surface water, wetlands, forestry, wildlife, etc.) and increases their general environmental awareness and stewardship ethic.

Students participate in handson learning activities focusing on groundwater, the importance of water to all life, the water cycle and groundwater's role in it. They are provided information on drinking water and how to protect it and keep it clean for themselves and future generations. Fun activities are incorporated into classroom sessions, allowing students to participate in water related experiments, activities, and entertainment designed to help them retain environmental principles of water. Students will also enjoy an entertainment show presented by the "Fishin' Magicians."

Each student, teacher and volunteer will receive a complimentary T-shirt. Elizabeth Jackson at Leroy High School designed the artwork for the Tshirt and will receive a $50 savings bond for the creative drawing. Local high school student volunteers will participate in the event providing classroom presentations. Student volunteers and teachers will receive a gift bag filled with posters, educational materials and assorted items.

The festival is hosted by Ciba Specialty Chemicals and sponsored by the Ben May Foundation, ADEM, Alabama Coastal Foundation, Inc., Alabama Rural Water Association, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Frankville Water & Fire Protection Authority, Huntsman Advanced Materials Americas, Inc., Leroy Volunteer Fire Department, Leroy Water Authority, McIntosh Water Authority, Pine City Lawn & Garden, Inc., St. Stephens Water System, SouthWest Bank and Washington County Water & Fire Protection Authority.
