Letter to the Editor House Bill 98 (HB) has been voted out of committee in Montgomery. The next step is for this bill to be put on the calendar and then goes to the House for a vote. HB 98 is a bill that calls for a Constitutional Convention to draw up a new Constitution for the state of Alabama and doing away with the present 1901 Alabama Constitution. I am strongly opposed to HB 98. I am strongly opposed to abolishing the 1901 Constitution for two reasons: 1. The 1901 Alabama Constitution guarantees that the Legislature of Alabama must operate within a balanced budget and they cannot plunge the state into debt (like the federal government has.) 2. The 1901 Alabama Constitution guarantees the citizens a right to vote before the state or the county can impose taxes on the citizens: any kind of taxes, sales or property. Politicians often cleverly disguise a tax by calling it a "fee." Washington County has a $20 "fee" on each license plate. I believe Clarke County recently imposed a "fee," too? Please contact Representative Marc Keahey and express your opposition to HB 98. Can you imagine what our taxes will be in a few years if the right of the people to vote on new taxes is abolished.
