Man wanted by JPD for car theft apprehended A man wanted for stealing a vehicle from a Jackson car dealership is currently being held at the Montgomery Detention Facility and is also accused of using false identities to cash checks in several states. James Carter Tucker Jr., 53, of Monroeville was arrested by Montgomery Police last week on forgery and use of false identifications charges. He also faces identity theft charges in Georgia and forgery charges in Indiana. According to Inv. Richard Harvey, Tucker was being sought by Jackson Police in connection with the theft of a 2001 Dodge Ram pickup on Feb. 27, from Town & Country Autos. He allegedly leased the vehicle using the name Ben Welch, an Atlanta, Ga. resident's identity he is accused of stealing. It is believed he forged several checks in Jackson, one at the local Wal-Mart. Harvey said he has been working with investigators from Monroe County, Montgomery, Georgia and Indianapolis, Ind. concerning other theft and forgeries allegedly committed by Tucker. Harvey said after the vehicle was reported stolen in Jackson, he entered its information into the National Crime Information Center's (NCIS) system. On April 18 he received a hit from the Opelika Police Department, who discovered the truck after it had been towed by a local wrecker company. "The suspect apparently had the vehicle towed after it broke down on the interstate," he said. "The owner of the repair shop became suspicious by some of Tucker's actions and called police. He apparently said he lived in Montgomery and was working overseas, but the vehicle had a Tennessee tag on it, which was later determined to be stolen." Tucker avoided being charged in Opelika and was arrested on the forgery charges in Montgomery several days later. He will face charges in a number of courts before being returned to Clarke County. Harvey said the use of video surveillance played a role in Tucker's capture. "He used a number of false identities to conduct a wideranging check-cashing scheme," he added.
Harvey thanked all of the law enforcement departments who helped capture Tucker, especially the Monroeville Police Department.
