We must step up fight against 'trashers'
Littering and illegal dumping are the most preventable crimes committed. Just this morning (Wednesday) another incident of illegal dumping on Salt Works Road near Jackson was brought to my attention. There is no excuse for people to dump broken, discarded furniture and other garbage on that road, they are thoughtless and destructive. The tipping fees at the local landfill are minimal when compared to the damage to the environment and local landscape by these self-serving individuals. Several people who live in the Bolen Town area have been combatting this problem for some time now. Just a little way up the road from this newest site a previous problem area was finally taken care of and a fence erected to prevent future dumping. Now the perpetrators have chosen a site farther down the road. With all of the exposure in The South Alabamian, you'd think they would take notice. Obviously some skulls are thicker than others. The photo at the right shows the current illegally dumped debris. It truly appalls me that this is still taking place.
Second, we must educate future generations about the dangers posed to the environment. I have taught my son never to litter and he feels as strongly about the issue as I do. Without this type of involvement and dedication by all citizens we will always have this problem. To those of you out there who don't think much about throwing a gum wrapper, cigarette butt or soda can alongside our roads, try keeping your trash inside the vehicle until stopping somewhere where there is a garbage can. How hard can that be?
Illegal dumpers are the worst of the litterers because they share their large amounts of discards with all of us. Sometimes these things smell as they decay and sometimes they spread more debris as they rot, making an even uglier sight. Those who dump illegally should feel ashamed of themselves.
