Turn lane for Highway 43 welcome news

welcome news

The announcement last week that the Alabama Department of Transportation will construct a center turn lane on U.S. Highway 43 in north Jackson is welcomed news, both from a traffic and safety viewpoint and as an aid to business expansion and development along the corridor.

Mayor Richard Long said ALDOT Director Joe McInnes has committed to the needed turn lane from West Point Drive to the McVay Road intersection.

Traffic along Highway 43 has grown dramatically in the last few years. Coupled with the expansion of businesses and vehicles constantly turning left and right along the route and it has made for some hazardous driving.

There have been accidents, and even fatalities, along the stretch.

The turn lane won't be a cure-all, certainly, but it should help the traffic problem.

And if the traffic problem can be helped, it will likely help existing businesses along the stretch of highway and encourage new ones as well.

The construction work will likely be a headache but we will live with that if it will be a help in the long run.
