Jackson sales tax receipts show 13 percent increase During his report to the Jackson City Council at Tuesday's regular meeting, Mayor Richard Long said sales tax revenues are up 13 percent from March of 2006, indicating that more people are spending money in the city. An economic boom in Jackson is evident with new construction and expansion projects taking place in a number of locations. Almost monthly an announcement of a new business opening is made. Going hand-in-hand with the strong economy, are the objectives of the local committee members taking part in the Alabama Cities of Excellence (ACE) strategic planning for Jackson. The city was chosen to participate in the program last year, after which a committee was formed and split into separate groups to focus on different aspects of a strategic plan. Tuesday, Mayor Long said the ACE team members had met with ACE strategists John Clyde Riggs and Larry Watts to discuss a comprehensive and emergency plan for Jackson should it be announced that German steel company ThyssenKrupp will locate a plant in Calvert. The Calvert site is one of two being considered. The other site is in Louisiana. Long said Watts will submit a proposal to the city next week. "If the steel mill locates in Calvert, we will need such a plan," he added. ThyssenKrupp reportedly employs more than 180,000 people in 70 countries. The newly proposed facility would employ nearly 3,000 people once it is up and running, with the potential for 38,000 to 52,000 indirect jobs over a 20- year period. ThyssenKrupp produces hot and cold roll steel as well as products that include medical equipment, kitchen appliances and elevators. The new plant will be a hot strip mill which will be used primarily to process slabs from the new ThyssenKrupp CSA steel mill in Brazil. There will be cold rolling and hot-dip coating capacities for high-quality end products of flat carbon steel.
"Unlike the Montgomery- Hyundai project, this time Jackson is on a major four-lane U.S. highway from Mobile and we will experience tremendous opportunities from the project," said Long. "We have the infrastructure to attract and service these opportunities but this will increase greatly the demand for housing, hotels, restaurants and other service industries. Jackson and Clarke County are now experiencing many new opportunities but this will be a significant lifechanging opportunity for all of the citizens of Clarke County,"
