City commits nine acres for new park
By Evan Carden SA Editor

The Jackson City Council voted, Tuesday, to commit approximately nine acres of city property for the proposed Pine City Park.

The resolution to commit the property was approved contingent upon the park committee raising the necessary funds to construct the park. The property designated is located adjacent to the New Era softball field.

Nancy McDonald, Asbury Daffin and Johnny Heritage, representing the Pine City Park Committee, pitched their idea for building a three to five acre city park to the Jackson City Council during its Feb. 13 meeting. M c D o n a l d, who is spearheading the project, said the hope is to have a large enough tract of land to have a basketball court, large pavilion, walking/jogging track, smaller picnic areas and a playground for all ages to enjoy. She explained that it could be built in phases, beginning with one component and expanding from that point.

Earlier this week, McDonald said a company is being considered for the project and would be in Jackson May 8 to meet with both children and adults for input on the park. She said the company uses wood composite structures and wants children to help design it by telling the company what they want.

The design is normally based on the history of the area where it is built, kind of like a theme. In Jackson elements of the wood and logging industry might be incorporated.

Tuesday, McDonald told the council an estimated cost for building the park is between $350,000 and $400,000. Mayor Richard Long said he would present a resolution for consideration at the April 24 meeting to ask the Clarke County Recreation Committee to commit a portion of the funds for the project.

"We want help from the entire community in raising the funds for this project" said McDonald. "We have been looking at different grant opportunities and have already found some."
