Mark Your Calendar JHS Class of 1987 meeting April 22 The Jackson High School Class of 1987 will be conducting a class reunion meeting on Sunday, April 22, 3 p.m. at the Visitation Catholic Church in Jackson. Jobs Fair and Business Expo May 4 The 9th annual Jobs Fair and Business Expo will be conducted on Friday, May 4, 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Mobile Civic Center. It is Mobile's largest expo with more than 125 businesses to be present. The event is sponsored by the South Alabama Regional Planning Commission (SARPC) and the city of Mobile. Benefit for Hicks family April 28 Tracey Anderson, owner and trainer of Team Storm, will be hosting a mixed martial arts event called "Team Storm Presents; Tough Enough III...'Survival" on April 28 at the Jackson National Guard Armory. Part of the proceeds from the sales that evening will go to the Hicks family in Jackson who has recently had a tremendous tragdey in their family. The proceeds will help with hospital expenses and expenses as a result of being out of work during this time with their child. The martial arts event will be filled with knockouts, tap outs, slams and mixed martial arts fighting. GES Kindergarten registration April 19 Gillmore Elementary School in Jackson will be conducting kindergarten registration on Thursday, April 19 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Every child must have a certified birth certificate, Alabama blue immunization form, Social Security card and be 5 years old by Sept. 2, 2007. All necessary documents are required at time of registration. 21st Castleberry Strawberry Festival April 21 Final preparations are now being made for the 21st annual Castleberry Strawberry Festival. The festival will be conducted in downtown Castleberry on Saturday, April 21. There will be arts and crafts booths and fresh strawberries for sale. Several booths will contain handmade items. Entertainment will include Jenna Calloway from Pensacola, Fla. at 9:15 a.m. Others to perform include The Twin Creek Cloggers from Brewton, Just N Tyme with Greg Wyndham from Andalusia, Highway 83 from Evergreen and Perfect Image from Mobile. There will be several food vendors and free entertainment. Bring a lawn chair and plan to spend the day. For booth and festival information call 251- 966-2422. Hudson Family Reunion April 21 Descendants of the Robert Hudson, Lee Hudson, Willard Hudson, Berta Hudson Hoven and Annie Hudson Driskell will gather for a family reunion on Saturday, April 21 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Kimbell House in Jackson. Robinson Family Reunion The descendants of Manuel Robinson and Wealthy Lynum Robinson will be meeting at the Robinson Family Reunion on Aug. 2-5. Clarke County NAACP meeting The Clarke County NAACP meeting scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled. The meeting will be conducted on Thursday, April 12 (today) at 6 p.m. The executive board and all members are asked to be present. Culture Fest planned May 5 The annual "Culture Fest", sponsored by Genesis, Inc and the city of Jackson, is planned for May 5 on the Jackson City Hall grounds from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Businesses, groups and churches are asked to reserve a booth space. For space availability, call 251-247-0888. There will be food and entertainment and games for the children. Cash prizes and prize drawings will occur throughout the day. You must be present to win. Admission is free. Applications for booths may be picked up from Doshia's and the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. Henley Cemetery Decoration service April 22 The Henley Cemetery annual Decoration Service is scheduled for Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. The cemetery is located in Fulton. Contest deadline April 13 The Grove Hill Arts Council is sponsoring a photography contest and exhibit April 27-29 at the Clarke County Museum. Chip Cooper, an award winning Alabama photographer, will be judging the event. Entries must be brought to the public libraries in Grove Hill, Jackson or Thomasville, through April 13. Rikard's Mill reopening April 14 The annual reopening of Rikard's Mill in Beatrice is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. The grist mill will feature turning out meal and grits as it was done when Jake Rikard first established the mill on Flat Creek in 1845. There will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, storytelling, arts and crafts. Bluegrass, southern gospel and country music will be performed throughout the day. Barbecue will also be available for purchase. The mill is located between Monroeville and Camden, located on Highway 265, five miles north of Beatrice. Health Awareness Fair planned Bertha Mae Chapter No. 314 Order of the Eastern Star will be conducting their annual Health Awareness Fair on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Jackson City Hall. There will be screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, speech and weight check. Mini seminars will be presented on diabetes and health care disparities, hospice care, nursing home care, WIC/Immunizations, diet and exercise and Alzheimer's support. The public is encouraged to attend. WSML summer reading program The White Smith Memorial Library in Jackson will be conducting its summer reading program for students in K-4th grade. Early registration will be on April 16, 4-6 p.m. Registration will continue through April 20. The fee is $10. The summer reading program will be conducted during the month of June. SWAIA meeting April 17 The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association, SWAIA, will be conducting a public meeting on Tuesday, April 17, 7 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse. Guest speaker will be attorney J.R. Morgan. He has a law practice in Jackson. The topic of discussion will be "Preserving Your Legal Rights: Adverse Land Possession." FBC Mom's Day Out and 4K registration Registration is now open to the public for Mom's Day Out classes and 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) class for the 2007- 2008 school year. Mom's Day Out meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. until noon for ages 6 months to 3 years of age. The 4K program meets every morning from 8 a.m. until 12 noon for those who will be 4 years of age on or before Sept. 2, 2007. Crop for Cancer The Clarke-Washington EMC's Relay for Life team is hosting a scrapbooking crop to benefit the American Cancer Society on Friday, April 13 from 6-10 p.m. at the office, 1307 College Ave. in Jackson. PSA-United Way seeking volunteers Wednesday, April 25 has been designed as the 13th Day of Caring and the United Way of Southwest Alabama is seeking volunteers from the community to spend a day caring in the agencies. A Day of Caring is a day spent working on projects the United Way partner agencies need done but lack the time, staff or money to see them through. Projects range from mulching and weeding, building wheelchair ramps to packing food boxes at the local food bank, reading to children or assisting the elderly with gardening. Each assignment supports the nonprofit agencies that work year-round to benefit the community. To obtain volunteer forms contact the United Way office at 251-431-0113.
