Toddler returns home; other one remains critical
By Evan Carden SA Editor

One of two toddlers who nearly drowned in a swimming pool at a home day care facility near Jackson, March 8, has returned home after more than a week in the hospital.

John Thomas Atchison, the son of Lori and Chip Atchison was well enough to be released from the University of South Alabama's Women and Children's Hospital, Monday, March 12. Lori Atchison said, Tuesday, that her son was still struggling with pneumonia and was not quite as active as he should be, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Cole Hicks, the son of Tiffany and Robert Hicks was reportedly still in critical condition as of Wednesday's press deadline.

The toddlers were found in a pool at Nancy Overstreet's home day care. Emergency responders from five agencies responded to the scene.

Correction

It was incorrectly stated in last week's issue that Jackson Police Officer Carey Slayton was the first to arrive on the scene. Alabama State Trooper Darrell Linder was the first to arrive and administered CPR to the Atchison child. Slayton arrived a short time later and administered CPR to the Hicks child. Day care owner Nancy Overstreet and employee Breanna McGuire are credited with pulling the children from the pool and beginning CPR. Both boys were flown to the Mobile hospital by LifeFlite helicopter.

During last week's Jackson City Council meeting, Jackson Police Deputy Chief Mark Harrell commended all those who worked to save the lives of the two children. He specifically commended Trooper Linder, officers Slayton and Barry Fowler and JPD Dispatcher Cynthia Foxx.

Fund-raising efforts to assist the Atchison and Hicks families with expenses related to the incident have been coordinated during area events and at local schools. Several thousand dollars have been raised.
