Eleven students from Solid Rock Christian School and one student from Jackson Academy recently attended a TeenPact Leadership class in Montgomery. The four-day class was held during the legislative session. For the Alabama I TeenPact session, there were 53 students from across Alabama with 12 staff members.

TeenPact, based in Jefferson, Ga., has the mission of turning students into statesmen to help the next generation change their world.

At TeenPact Leadership class, students learn about the political process and the basics of state government from a Christian perspective. He/she gains an understanding of his/her responsibility as a citizen of the United States. The class includes meeting important officials, interviewing lobbyists, viewing campaign disclosures, improving public speaking skills, analyzing public policies using a Biblical worldview and prayer walks around the capitol area.

Classes were held in the state capitol and in the Gordon Persons' building. Field experiences included visiting the Statehouse and the Supreme Court. After classes each day, the students traveled to Camp Chandler, a YMCA camp near Wetumpka, to have meals and spend the night. TeenPact students submitted folder of required homework on arrival for the class. This year's work focused on the meaning of liberty and the U.S. Constitution. Homework included writing bill that hopefully would get passed in the TeenPact legislature, where parliamentary procedure is used. Daily tests were given and a graduation was held on the last day.

This year the students had the opportunity to hear the following guest speakers: Sen. Hank Irwin (Shelby County), Rep. Cam Ward (Shelby County), Chris Isaacson, a lobbyist and executive vicepresident of the Alabama Forestry Association, Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Patti Smith, and Eva Newman from the White House of the Confederacy.

"Miss Eva" gave an especially inspiring talk. She came to America at age 19 after being held in a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. She tried to help the students understand what a wonderful blessing it is to live in the U.S. of America.

Elections were held for governor, chief justice, and representatives. Anna Kate Mullinix of Jackson was elected to the office of chief justice which included the honor of giving a speech at graduation.

After graduating from a TeenPact state class, students then qualify to attend National Convention and other TeenPact alumni events.
