Toyki King enjoys every moment of life
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Toyki King
How you enjoy your life is mostly based on your perception and CCARC (Clarke County Association for Retarded Citizens) client Toyki King has a great perception of what life has to offer.

The 24-year-old Winn resident was on a waiting list for CCARC's services and now that he is a participant in the organization's programs, he's taking full advantage of everything they have to offer. He enjoys every activity he is involved in from picking up trash in local parking lots to visiting with his friends and singing with a vocal group.

The mission of CCARC is to assist its clients in obtaining their personal goals in order to achieve what they want from life and King has many goals to achieve. A graduate of Jackson Middle School, he is currently studying to get his general education diploma (GED), hopes to go back to school and aspires to get a job, hopefully as a greeter at the Jackson Wal-Mart.

In the meantime, he said he loves being part of what CCARC has to offer. "I like helping clean the dining room here and getting to know everyone," he said.

Education is never far from his mind. He enjoys reading and researching his ancestry.

An avid music lover, King also loves singing and playing his bongos. He will be given the opportunity to display his singing talent when he performs with a singing group at CCARC's annual fund-raising event, Spring Jubilee, March 17. He also enjoys watching the popular national talent show "American Idol." Another one of his favorite television shows is "One On One."

When he's not at the CCARC center in Jackson, King spends time playing with his dogs Goldie, a Chihuahuaa and Trailer, a mixed breed. He also enjoys attending church with his mother, Sharon (Thomas) King, who is a preacher. He has three siblings, two sisters, Wendy and Vernetta and a brother, Derrick Taylor.

King has also begun to hone his cooking skills, making spaghetti and fried chicken on occasion. But his favorite food is ice cream.

In 2003, King experienced one of the greatest losses in his life when his grandmother, Barbara Thomas Chapman passed away. "We spent a lot of time together and I miss her," he said. "She was my best friend and I think about her almost every day."

King thanked CCARC employee BeBe Garrett for getting him involved with the programs offered at the center. "If not for her I wouldn't be here," he said.

At the center he continues to learn new things. He is training to use a computer and learning about money. "I've been here since New Year's and really like it," he added.

The public will have the opportunity to meet King and many of CCARC's other clients at this year's Spring Jubilee. Everyone is invited to come out March 17 and enjoy a day of fun, food and entertainment. See next week's edition of The South Alabamian for a profile of the event.
