Pine City

Ambassador

applications due

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking high school juniors in the Jackson and Leroy areas to participate in the Pine City Ambassador program.

The new program will begin in August. The program is designed to help students prepare for a successful future and represent their school and communities with honor and pride.

"Ambassadors chosen will develop strong leadership skills and to learn more about themselves and their community," said LaShaunda Holly, chamber director. St. Jude annual trail

ride Saturday

The fourth annual fund-raiser, "Saddle Up" for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will be Saturday, March 10 at Kaiser Farms, located on US 90 near Seminole, 10 miles east of Robertsdale. The event is an alcohol-free family event that includes horseback riding, hay rides, live auction, arts and crafts show, catered lunch and live music. Last year's event raised $12,708 and included participation from more than 800 people and over 500 horses.

Riders are encouraged to get sponsors. Download sponsor forms at www.stjude.org/saddleup.

There will be great prizes with the Saddle Up logo for the riders. Participants raising $35 or more receive a T-shirt and lapel pin; those raising $75 or more receive a backpack, T-shirt and lapel pin; raising $125 or more receive a sweatshirt, backpack, T-shirt and lapel pin; raising $175 or more receive a cap, sweatshirt, backpack, T-shirt and lapel pin.

Barbecue lunches will be sold to spectators for $6. The live auction will consist of donated items from various businesses from Jackson, Ala. to Lucedale, Miss. and various parts of Florida, most with a horse and cowboy theme such as feed and tack. Gates open at 7 a.m. Admission which includes lunch is $15 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Everyone is invited to bring their own horse or enjoy a spectacular trail on one of the four tractor-pulled hayrides. Elaine Petty will be performing country music with Rock-A-Billy Soul live beginning at 11 a.m. and 95 KSJ will also be doing a live remote.

The Jackson Financial Seminar (Loan Clinic) will be conducted at Jackson City Hall on Tuesday, March 13 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the event. Topics will include "How to secure funding", "How to apply for a loan", "Community Express Loan Program" and "Technical Assistance".

SWAIA to meet

The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will be conducting a meeting on Tuesday, March 20, 7 p.m. at Jackson Steakhouse.

Guest speakers will be District 68 State Representative Thomas Jackson and District 65 Representative Marc Keahey.

Both representatives will update the general public on legislative activities. There will be a question and answer period.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, school reform, truancy, rural housing development, career/employment opportunities, health care disparities, legal readiness, voter education/ awareness, public service accountability as well as youth and senior citizens' concerns.

The SWAIA is a nonprofit organization committed to promoting community unity and improvement.

The Jackson High School Class of 1977 will be conducting their 30th class reunion meeting on Saturday, March 17, 4 p.m. at Jackson Steakhouse in Jackson.

Everyone is invited to participate.

Jackson Women's League hosting golf

tournament

The Jackson Women's League will be hosting a four-person scramble golf tournament, 18 holes, on Saturday, March 10.

Registration is 8 a.m. with teeoff at 9. There will be money, prizes and lunch after play.

Dreams at Rhapsody in Blue Stables is accepting applications for riding lessons, therapeutic riding lessons and lesson volunteers. Without volunteers to assist with beginner riders and riders with physical disabilities these opportunities could not be provided.

ATFA hosting

landowner tour

The Alabama Treasure Forest Association and the Clarke County Forestry Planning Committee are hosting a Landowner Tour on Saturday, March 10 north of Jackson.

Topics will include logging practices, forest product utilization, invasive species, cost share programs, prescribe burning and an update on the new LP oriented strand board mill.

Speakers will be Tom Thompson, Louisiana Pacific, Madeline Hildreth and Benji Elmore of the Alabama Forestry Commission.

GES 4K

registration March 9

Gillmore Elementary School will be conducting 4-year-old kindergarten registration on Friday, March 9 beginning at 8 a.m.

In order to register, children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 2.

At the time of registration, the child's birth certificate, Social Security card and the Alabama blue immunization form must be presented.

The fee is $150 and due that day.

Registration is limited to 16 children and on a first come, first serve basis.

Additional names may be placed on a waiting list in the event one of the spots becomes available.

for CCARC Chili

Tasting Fair

The Clarke County Association for Retarded Citizens (CCARC) will be hosting their "Chili Tasting Fair" at the CCARC Spring Jubilee on Saturday, March 17.

The chili tasting contest has five entries to date and are wanting five more. Contestants should call Helen Guy at 251- 246-9603 to register.

A copy of the recipe should be sent a week in advance and will be made available to visitors for 50 cents per copy. Contestants should also bring enough chili for tasters to purchase. Samples will be sold for 50 cents.

Those competing should come early to decorate their booths and judging will be at 10 a.m.

Alabama River

Festival March 10

The Alabama River Festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Claiborne Lock and Dam.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children.

The festival will include reenactments from the 1700s and 1800s.

Visit with Indians, frontiersmen, traders and travelers.

There will be music, demonstrations and food.

Bring in artifacts and fossils and the University of Alabama experts, Dr. Don Jones and Dr. Jerry Oldshure, will be on hand to identify and answer questions.
