Two area teams to play for state titles

Two Washington County basketball teams are playing this week in Birmingham for state titles.

For the second year in a row, the McIntosh Lady Demons head to Birmingham for another shot at winning a 1A state title.

The ladies of south Washington County advanced through the quarter finals and semi-finals for the chance to do their magic two years straight.

On Feb. 21, they defeated Pleasant Home 71-41 and went on to face Brantley, defeating them by a whopping 81-43.

Washington County High's Lady Bulldogs marched through the 3A brackets for their first shot at a state title.

In the quarter finals, the ladies from Chatom pulled out a close one over Clay County, defeating them 58-53.

They faced Calhoun in the the semi-finals, mounting a spectacular come-from-behind win, led by star player Brittany Leverett, who sunk two free-throws in the final minutes of the game to clinch the 56-54 victory.

Due to Tuesday's press deadline, The South Alabamian will have the results of these games in next week's edition.
