Volunteers make a difference at Dreams Therapeutic Riding in Chatom

This young girl is awarded ribbons for her accomplishments.
Dreams Therapeutic Riding is a community-oriented program committed to providing equine assisted activities to individuals with mental, cognitive and or physical disabilities, disadvantaged, troubled, "Children In Need Of Service" (CHINS) and at risk youth, foster children and their families, children with learning disabilities, children of divorce, individuals required to participate in community service and wanting to learn or improve their horsemanship.

Dreams at Rhapsody in Blue Stables is accepting applications for riding lessons, therapeutic riding lessons and lesson volunteers. Without volunteers to assist with our beginner riders and riders with physical disabilities, we would never be able to provide services to this group.

Anyone interested, please call Leigh Meyer or Melanie Petcher at 251-847-6343. Spring session begins March 14.

"We've seen so many life changes in our riders and volunteers. It's amazing how both

groups benefit!" said Meyer.

Dreams at Rhapsody in Blue

Stables is located in Chatom and they offer:

Therapeutic riding and riding academy - provides riding instruction for individuals from the most physically, mentally or emotionally impaired to the national level competitor.

Saddle up for success - provides equine assisted activities for "at risk" youth in southwest Alabama and southeast Mississippi.

The 40 developmental assets are taught through experiential learning through activities that center around horses and the barn environment. Results inspire and motivate youth to succeed beyond the heritage of poverty, crime and welfare.

Horses in the classroom- provides equine assisted activities for special education students considered "severely profound mentally retarded". Academic standards in history, language arts and science are taught and reinforced along with the 40 developmental assets. Results have been phenomenal as reported by the director of special education for Washington County and teachers of these students.

Dancing with horses- provides advocacy education on behalf of inclusive activities and individuals with disabilities.

The Independent Mounted Drill Team and Assisted Rider Mounted Drill Team of Dreams present demonstrations of U.S. Cavalry Mounted Drills for the public. The exciting routines demonstrate the abilities of individuals with disabilities and the benefits of people with and without disabilities working together. Demonstrations are followed by a clinic on inclusive activities and a question and answer period.
