Friends and family members of former Washington County Coroner Leon Harris attended an appreciation reception in the small courtroom of the Washington County Courthouse, Friday.

The reception was organized by the office of the new coroner, Shane Thornton, who presented Harris with a plaque of appreciation for his 12 years of service to the county. "Anyone who talks about Leon Harris can say one thing for certain," said Thornton, "that he has always handled the office (of coroner) with respect."

Harris was also presented with a resolution and certificate of appreciation from the Washington County Commission. When asked about his years of service to the county, Harris, who is also a minister, said, "It has been an emotional roller coaster. Anytime someone dies, no matter what the circumstances, someone is left hurting. I always looked at the job as an extension of my ministry. I don't look at this as a retirement, just that I've changed directions."
