The Chatom Community Center on Feb. 23 was the setting for the Friends of the Washington County Public Library's 14th annual art auction and dinner. More than 200 people enjoyed the evening which included live music by Randy McKee and Tiffany Dumas, a raffle, silent auction, live auction and dinner.

Michael Onderdonk, MC and library board chairman told the crowd that this annual civic effort by Friends of the Library (FOL) has become a model for fund-raising for other civic groups. Penny Schell, chairperson FOL, announced that during the past 14 years, the FOL has raised $200,000 for the Washington County Public Library.

The theme for the evening was "Get a Clue," based on the board game Clue. Jessica Ross, library director, explained that this was the theme for the past summer's reading program and those themes are carried out in the annual auction each year. Table decorations depicted characters from the Clue game and the Washington County Camellia Maids and a male escort dressed as characters from the game.

The bidding was very lively as Edward P. Turner and Tatum Turner, local attorneys, served as auctioneers. In addition to framed art work, an autographed football by the University of Alabama's new head coach, Nick Saban, brought $500 and lumber donated by Forbes Lumber Company of Millry brought $1,000. Many local businesses and individuals made contributions as sponsors and donors.
