Clarke County Superintendent of Schools Gerald Stephens rated 45 out of 52 possible points on his evaluation by the State Board of Education.

Dr. John Osburn, who has been evaluating Stephens over the past several months told board members of his findings during the Clarke County Board of Education meeting Feb. 22.

"If I had not known he had been elected I would have encouraged him to run for office," Osburn said.

He explained he made the evaluation from several sources, including a survey completed by the school board members and staff members, an interview and Stephens' portfolio.

Teacher of the Year Ruth Allen, a fourth grade teacher at Grove Hill Elementary School was selected as Clarke County Teacher of the Year. She was presented a plaque during the board meeting and Stephens thanked her for her work in the schools.

Superintendent's report

School system report cards were distributed to board members. Stephens told them to contact testing coordinator Julia Ann Deas with any questions, which would also be brought out at the next board meeting.

He said rain and cold weather had delayed progress on the sports complex in Grove Hill as well as the new Clarke County High School building, but they were "making headway."

Stephens reported 30 new school buses had been delivered to the system and they were running well.

Other business

Robert Hagood presented a report on the school system's web page.

Board members agreed to give a property easement on land adjacent to Wilson Hall Middle School to Ricky Everett. In exchange for the easement Everett will pay the attorney's fee for the documentation
