Sendora Owens enjoys fulfilling life thanks in part to CCARC
She has a happy personality but, just underneath the surface, there is also a drive to achieve more. Owens, who has been receiving services from the Clarke County Association for Retarded Citizens (CCARC) for some time now, continues to grow as a contributing member of society. She recently started a part-time job and continues as an active participant of the "Get Lost In Jackson" get fit program. She participated in the program last year and has already lost three pounds as a participant in the 2007 program, visiting HealthActions several times a week to work out. In the meantime, Owens has also obtained a part-time job as a maid one time a week at the Stringer home. "I mop, wash dishes, vacuum and clean the bathroom every Tuesday," she said. "The job is easy to me and I like earning my own money." She said she hopes to get more work by adding at least a couple more homes to her workload. "It has really helped me build confidence in myself to take on a job," she added. Owens' personal life continues to bloom as well. She and fellow CCARC client Joseph Ervin have been dating for some time, and are now engaged. "We haven't said when we will get married, but we hope to one day," she said as she smiled. And that smile is something that is hard to miss about Owens, as it is almost always shining on her face. She said her life has been more fulfilling since she began taking part in the services offered by CCARC. "I like coming to the center each day and visiting with my friends," she said. When she's not at the center, exercising or working, Owens enjoys helping her mother, watching television, reading her Bible and attending church. She is an active member at Midway Baptist Church, which is located in the Dickinson community. Owens said she is also looking forward to CCARC's annual fund-raising event, Spring Jubilee, which gives the community the opportunity to visit with the organization's clients and discover more about what services are offered at the center. This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, and will feature many fun activities, entertainment and food. See a future edition of The South Alabamian for details about this event.
Owens is proof that the mission of CCARC is working. That objective includes allowing clients to express what they want to achieve in their lives and to set goals to work toward in order to do so. The organization is always looking to improve upon the services it offers and wants to grow along with the community.
